A Pomander for Every Year

Roary and Poppa made a pomander together Thanksgiving evening. Poppa makes one just about every year, he used to make them with me when I was little, and they're rather wonderful, in a folksy, medieval kind of way. They smell beautiful.

All you need to make your own is an orange, some cloves, and maybe a small nail, awl, skewer or toothpick to make the holes to push the cloves into, if your orange is particularly tough. I've seen many tutorials online that suggest rolling the orange in clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, sandalwood, or any combination of the above.

Historically speaking, cloves were once worth more than gold, and oranges were equally rare. A pomander would have been a gift worth more than you can imagine!

  1. Sometimes, we add a pomander just like this one to a simmering pot of apple cider to make mulled cider. You can also do the same thing with wine.
